Water will be available in the volunteer tent. You may want to bring additional snacks and beverages for personal consumption during your shift.

SATURDAY SHIFTS

Athlete Check-In

The day before the race 2000 athletes will be arriving at Marina Green in preparation for the competition.  You will be assisting event staff in checking in the 2000 athletes who will be competing tomorrow. You will be among the first people at the event our athletes will be interacting with. They are arriving from all over the country and the world. Be friendly, hospitable, ask them where they are here from and welcome them to San Francisco!!!

  • Group 1: Entrance and ID Check / Bib Number
  • Group 2: Packet Pick Up / Bathing Cap
  • Group 3: Athlete Goodie Bag Distribution

Bike Valet

Athletes will come to the Bike Valet area and volunteers will 'park' their bike in the area. This secured area keeps their bikes safe. Full instructions on how to operate the bike valet area will be given to you by staff and Volunteer Leader when you arrive.

Body Marking

Each athlete in the competition needs to have their 'bib' numbers marked on their bodies for identification during tomorrow's race!  We're looking for volunteers with decent penmanship who aren't too shy to 'tattoo' the arms and legs of our athletes with special markers. It's fun, fast and a chance to get up close and personal with buff, in-shape well-toned bodies!  We'll supply the markers – you mark 'em up!

You will be working directly with the athletes, offering to apply their bib number tattoos to their arms, and marking their legs with indelible markers. Most of the athletes will be familiar with the process and not a bit shy about it, but remember to be respectful of their personal space! You will get the necessary supplies for this task and specific details will be explained to you when you meet with your Volunteer Leader and the Event Staff.

SUNDAY SHIFTS

Athlete Food Tent

Volunteers in the Athlete Food Tent will assist the catering company in providing friendly hospitality and food service to the competitors. Your tasks in this area will include:

  • 8:30: Prepping the Food Tent by assisting the caterer with food service set-up.
  • 9:30: Distributing food to athletes: This may vary depending on what is being served – you may be distributing boxed meals, or scooping out servings of pasta and chicken! Be helpful and friendly to these athletes who by now are plenty hungry! Be mindful of the length of the line and try to keep things moving during crowded times.
  • Some volunteers will be assigned to 'mark' athlete race numbers and/or guest credentials so that we know who has come through the food line. (Each person may only go through the food line once to ensure there is food left for everyone who completes the race!)
  • Area Upkeep – Assist with keeping tables clean, picking up trash, and keeping the area tidy and pleasant for everyone who will be arriving throughout the day.
  • Food service will end at approximately 1:30 p.m. and then you will assist with final area clean-up.

Specific details and assignments will be explained to you when you meet with your Volunteer Leader and the Event Staff.

Finish Corral - Medals, Water and Chip Retrieval

What could be more thrilling than being right at the finish line?!?

The finishing Corral is where the athletes arrive right after they cross the finish line. There is excitement, triumph, and media & TV cameras are here, where the athletes get to stop and collect themselves after completing the race.

You will be working at one of the following tasks that take place immediately after our athletes run past the spectator bleachers and triumphantly and exhaustively cross the Finish Line!

  • Assisting Race Directors with distributing Finisher Medals
  • Distributing bottled water to athletes
  • Removing the Timing Chips from athletes ankles

Specific details of these tasks will be explained to you when you meet with your Volunteer Leader and the Event Staff. Depending on the number of volunteers in the area, you may be rotated among any of the above duties to ensure all the finish line assistance takes place in an efficient manner. Don't forget to congratulate the triumphant finishers on their remarkable accomplishment!

Bag Corral

The Bag Corral area is where each athlete's two swim bags are picked up after the race. The first swim bag is the 'swim start bag' they drop off as they board the boat for Alcatraz. Those will be brought over on a truck shortly after the boat departs. 2000 bags! After the swimming leg is completed their 'swim exit bags' are placed on a truck and brought back to the bag corral. Another 2000 bags! Athletes who were given Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon T-shirts on Saturday, and who wish to exchange them for a different size will have the opportunity to do this when they pick up their bag on Sunday.

Aid Station - Transition

There are four tasks you will be responsible for in the Aid Station:

  1. Aid Station Set-up and Preparation
  2. Distributing Water and Cytomax Performance Drink
  3. Closing down Aid station and properly disposing of waste in an environmentally-friendly way
  4. Assisting with the break down of the transition area as the race nears its end
